Vomiting and Diarrhea in Adults
Vomiting and Diarrhea in AdultsAlmost everyone has experienced vomiting or diarrhea. And worse, some have both at the same time.Vomiting and diarrhea are symptoms, not diseases. They are your body’s way of working to clear out infections, such as viruses or bacteria, or other toxins. For example, harmful bacteria can be found on spoiled or undercooked food, like chicken, or completely raw food, such as shellfish. When that happens, your body will do its best to get rid of it, with diarrhea or vomiting. Most likely it's a virus causing diarrhea or vomiting. But some people get diarrhea or vomit in response to emotional stress or anxiety.Vomiting and diarrhea can last a few hours or a few days. It depends on the cause. The important thing to do is replace the fluids you have lost, so you can prevent dehydration.Drink oral rehydration solutions such as Pedialyte–or you can make your own. You can also try clear broth.Until your symptoms are gone, it may help to avoid fruit, alcohol, caffeine, and spicy foods. Ginger or ginger ale can help settle your upset stomach. When you feel ready to start eating again, begin with simple, easy-to-digest foods like crackers, rice, and bananas. For diarrhea, your doctor may recommend that you take over-the-counter medicine, such as loperamide (Imodium). Read and follow all instructions on the label. You know yourself best, but get medical help right away: if you see blood in your vomit or diarrhea, have severe abdominal pain, a fever, severe headache, a stiff neck, confusion, dizziness, or you pass out.Vomiting and diarrhea usually aren’t serious, and you will feel better soon but if you aren’t getting better or if you have concerns, contact your doctor. This program is for informational purposes only.
